HOME SCHOOLING TIPS FOR TRAVELLING FAMILIES

Create Opportunities for Success

One of the most valuable things we can do as home schooling parents is create opportunities for success. When children feel capable and successful, they are far more likely to approach learning with confidence, resilience, and a positive attitude.

A simple way to do this is by easing into more challenging tasks with something familiar first. Before introducing a brand-new concept, try beginning with an activity your child already knows how to do well. This might include:

  • Numeracy revision
  • Handwriting practice
  • Reading aloud
  • Writing a letter or postcard home
  • Revising spelling words
  • Applying a previously learned skill in a new context

Starting with something achievable helps your child feel settled and capable before tackling more demanding learning.

Avoiding Overwhelm

When home schooling, especially while travelling, it can be tempting to cover large amounts of new content quickly. However, children often learn best when new concepts are introduced gradually and revisited regularly over time.

Rather than focusing on constant new learning, try prioritising:

  • Frequent revision
  • Short practice sessions
  • Conversations about previous learning
  • Real-world applications of skills
  • Small, manageable learning goals

Regular revision helps strengthen memory retention and consolidate understanding. Sometimes the most meaningful progress comes from revisiting and refining existing skills rather than constantly moving ahead.

The Importance of Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement plays a huge role in maintaining motivation and confidence. While academic achievement is important, it is equally valuable to praise:

  • Effort
  • Persistence
  • Neat handwriting
  • Resilience
  • Independence
  • Problem-solving
  • Willingness to try

Children thrive when they feel recognised for their hard work, not just for getting the “right” answer.

And yes, even our teenagers still appreciate encouragement from Mum or Dad!

Finding the Right Balance

Creating opportunities for success does not mean removing all challenge. In fact, challenge is an important part of learning and growth. The key is finding the right balance between support and stretch.

A child who experiences regular success is more likely to persevere when learning becomes difficult. Confidence grows over time through repeated experiences of:

  • Trying
  • Improving
  • Succeeding
  • Reflecting
  • Trying again

Home schooling while travelling provides a wonderful opportunity to tailor learning to your child’s pace, interests, and emotional needs - and sometimes, small adjustments can make a very big difference.

Tips from the Road

Add up the learning blocks in your child’s Caravan Classroom education plan after editing, then divide by 40 weeks to find your weekly average - you might be surprised how few there are. For example, our Year 6 daughter averages just 1.2 learning blocks per week (remember, this is the NEW curriculum content), showing that small, flexible, and consistent progress is far more manageable - and leads to long-term achievement.

All the best and happy travels,
