Supporting Families to Get Started

Curriculum design isn’t something you master overnight. As an experienced teacher, it took me years to feel confident in interpreting the curriculum, designing meaningful learning experiences, and developing simple, effective ways to monitor learner progress.
We know you're excited to get started on your once-in-a-lifetime trip, so we've done as much of the work as possible to make it easy for you!

The idea for Caravan Classroom came from seeing the same questions raised over and over on social media:

  • What exactly do I need to teach?
  • Surely we have to follow some sort of plan?
  • Do I need to cover the entire curriculum?
  • How do I make sure that my child stays on track while travelling?
  • Where do I even begin?

I wanted to remove the guesswork. Caravan Classroom offers a clear, flexible learning plan created by an experienced teacher who understands life on the road. With practical guidance on how to deliver the curriculum while travelling and ideas for monitoring progress - without hours of desk time or formal assignments - you’ll be set to support your child’s learning wherever your journey takes you.

Starting is often the hardest part. We’re here to make that first step simple and empowering.

Structure when you need it. Freedom when you want it

Distance Education or Home School?

When travelling with school-aged children, one of the first big questions is: Distance education or home schooling? The truth is, both can support travelling families — but which one suits your family best depends on your goals.

Distance education involves enrolling with a school or online learning provider. These institutions generally offer structured lessons, supply resources, and require regular submission of assessments - this often involves a requirement for students to be online at set times and for families to adhere to strict study schedules (essentially school but at home). For some, this works well but for us, it didn’t align with the reason we hit the road in the first place. We wanted to take a break from rigid schedules, demanding work commitments, and the daily grind — not recreate them on the road.

Home schooling gave us the freedom to teach our children in a way that reflected our values, our lifestyle, and our journey. That said, I was surprised to learn that in our state, there’s no legal requirement to follow the Australian Curriculum, only to provide 'a quality education'. As a teacher and a parent of children temporarily stepping outside the mainstream system, that didn’t sit quite right with me. I wanted their education to complement, not interrupt, their learning — to make their return to school smooth, not stressful.

I searched for pre-made teacher-designed, home school plans for travellers like us that were clearly mapped to the Australian Curriculum but couldn’t find what I needed. I didn't want expensive fees, ongoing subscriptions or only 'pieces of the puzzle' - I needed a complete overview. There were plenty of excellent resources and online programs for long-term home schoolers, but not a single ready-to-use curriculum mapped plan relevant to my context - and a plan is exactly what’s required when applying for home school registration in any state or territory.

Now that we are on the road, our pedagogy (teaching approach philosophy) focuses on strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, supported by the thoughtful use of simple technology and content that’s relevant to the places we visit. Although we home school regularly and follow a study routine with our kids, our approach is intentionally flexible and responsive to our travels. Learning becomes deeply meaningful when it connects with real-world experiences.

That’s why I created Caravan Classroom. Our home school education plans are specifically designed for families like yours - travelling families who want to turn their adventures into rich learning experiences without the stress of fixed schedules or a rigid, one-size-fits-all approach. We take the guesswork out of planning, so you can focus on what matters most: exploring, connecting, and learning together on the road.

All 8 Key Learning Areas — So You Can Choose What Works for Your Family

Our home school education plans are mapped to all eight Key Learning Areas (KLAs) of the Australian Curriculum, giving you a clear, year-level overview of what’s expected - including a general guide to the Languages curriculum (which can vary depending on the language you choose, if you choose to include it at all).

While you're not necessarily required to deliver every subject in full - and in practice, many families prioritise certain areas - we believe having access to a complete home school education plan empowers you to make intentional, well-informed choices about what to keep or cull.

For instance, our family follows the English and Mathematics curriculum closely to ensure strong foundational skills. Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) often emerge naturally through our travel experiences, and we build on these moments with curriculum-aligned activities that bring deeper context and relevance. Clear curriculum goals help us make the most of these experiences - so when we visit a historic site or significant landmark, we know exactly what to draw attention to and how to deepen learning.

We apply the same thinking to Science, Technologies, and Health & Physical Education - selecting content that aligns with our location, lifestyle, and experiences. While learning often occurs organically through what we’re doing and where we are, it’s still purposeful and guided. Knowing what the curriculum expects actually lightens our load - giving us confidence that we’re teaching with direction, not just reacting in the moment. Being organised and making informed decisions gives us peace of mind and genuinely takes the pressure off

In The Arts and Languages, we’ve chosen to focus more on real-world cultural experiences and personal interests rather than follow the curriculum content explicitly - though these areas are still included in our plans so families can make their own choices.

We don’t drip-feed content or lock it behind subscriptions. Instead, you receive a complete year-long, teacher-developed education plan upfront - structured and clearly mapped to the Australian Curriculum, so you can see the whole picture from the beginning.

Our resources aren’t just "open laptop, login, complete, repeat" programs. They’re flexible roadmaps designed to guide hands-on, meaningful learning that adapts to your journey - whether you're exploring a national park, a museum, or a quiet beach.

With a full, editable view of all subject areas, our plans give you both structure and freedom - so you can make confident, personalised decisions for your home schooling journey.
